Poem 25 (last one)

10/24/09
Larkin
Toads

I like the way that Larkin used the toad as a symbol. This poem made me think that Larkin did not like when he got pushed over. He also did not like it when defenseless people were taken advantage of.

Poem 24

10/24/09
Rich
Miracle Ice cream

First of all the title of this poem just makes me want to read it. Also, it makes me as happy as I can be. It makes me go back to times when I was younger swimming in my friends pool and going to the ice cream man while he was driving down the street.

Poem 23

10/24/09
Plath
Morning Song

This poem makes me feel like I should be a morning person. Usually when I have to wake up for school or early in the morning on a weekend, I am never in a good mood. This poem makes me feel that I should appreciate each and every morning.

Poem 22

10/24/09
Wordsworth
Speak!

It is a very powerful poem about speaking your mind. It makes me feel that I should stand up for what I believe in. It also makes me thing that Wordsworth was a very passionate man in everything he did.

Poem 21

10/24/09
Walcott
Love After Love

This poem made me feel that even after love, and then heartbreak, there can still be love again. It is a very hopeful poem because he says that you can bounce back after something bad happens to you.

Poem 20

10/24/09
Herbert
Nature

When I saw the title I thought that Herbert would be a transcendentalist poet and write about nature in a good light, but I was wrong. He takes the beauty of nature and twists it to make it a dark thing. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a dark thing.

Poem 19

10/24/09
Jonson
The Hour-Glass

Just by reading the title of this poem, it seems like it would be a very interesting, very deep poem. After reading the actual poem I found that I was correct. He uses personification to describe the hour-glass and this part of the poem made me feel like I knew exactly what he was writing about.

Poem 18

10/24/09
Keats
Bright Star

This is a poem about more than human affairs. He describes the night sky in a way that makes me feel like there is something more than just us humans in the universe.

Poem 17

10/24/09
Hughes
Dream Variations

This seems like it is a very uplifting poem, which is odd because it Langston Hughes usually writes about hardships. At the same time he puts in lines that seem like his usual writing style, something darker.

Poem 16

10/23/09
Cervantes
Valentine

This poem makes me feel peaceful. By the title I thought it would be a love poem but it is more than that. The vividness of the words she uses to describe a butterfly makes me see the goodness in the world.

Poem 15

10/23/09
Song
Stink Eye

This is a poem by the same poet as The Kindness of Others. It is weird to read these two poems back to back because it shows both ends of the spectrum of emotion by the same poet. This poem made me feel the complete opposite of The Kindness of Others.

Poem 14

10/23/09
Song
The Kindness of Others

Just the title of this poem made me feel better. Than I read the poem and it made me feel like there is that kind of kindness in the world. It also makes me feel like I should be kind to people if I want good things to happen to me.

Poem 13

10/23/09
Wilbur
A Fire-Truck

The reason that I picked this poem out of Wilbur's others is because I thought that by the title, it would be a poem with a lot of imagery, and I was correct. I could easily envision the red fire-truck roaring by him as he stands on the side of the street.

Poem 12

10/23/09
Williams
This Is Just To Say

I think that this poem has much more meaning then it seems. It is a short poem about a man eating someone's plums. I think that the plums represent something else in his life that means much more than just eating the plums of his friend.

Poem 11

10/21/09
The Unknown Citizen
W. H. Auden

After reading just the first stanza of the poem, it made me begin to think. It says that because he in unknown and because of it, he is a saint. I think that it is implying that the only way to be a truly good person is to be unknown. To do basically nothing.

Poem 10

10/20/09
Zero
No Author
http://picture-poems.com/week8/nothing.html

It is a poem that gives a lot of meaning to something that many people see as insignificant. It takes the number zero and describes it in a way that you would not normally think about. The biggest reason that I like this poem is because it is so creative.

Poem 9

10/20/09
Sonnet #1
William Shakespeare
http://www.poetry-archive.com/s/shakespeare_sonnet_001.html

It is hard to understand a lot of the words, mainly because it is Shakespeare. The words that I do understand make it obvious as to why Shakespeare was such a great writer. When it talks about a person being their own biggest enemy, that part of the poem is my favorite part.

Poem 8

10/20/09
The first Haiku
Basho Matsuo
http://www.edu.pe.ca/stjean/playing%20with%20poetry/Hennessey/examplesofHaiku.htm

I googled Haikus to try to find a good one to post about. I think that if comedy is not used in a Haiku, it should have a lot of meaning in just seventeen syllable, and this one does just that.

Poem 7

10/20/09
Song
H.D.
Poets.org: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15967

This poem makes me confused. I think the end of the poem is trying to say that everything in the universe is important and has a purpose. But the beginning is saying that beauty is everywhere, so I think that this short poem has many meanings.

Poem 6

10/20/09
Among the Multitude
Whitman
Poets.org: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/19418

While I was reading through titles of Whitman's works, I saw this one and it made me want to read it. I do not completely understand the poem, but I get the overall meaning of it. It makes me feel small, but some how at the same time, very important.

Poem 5

10/20/09
Equinox
Harjo
http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/16384

First of all I think that it is interesting that all I could find is two poems by Joy Harjo. Also, I liked the imagery that Harjo used through out the poem. She painted a picture with her words and I could almost see what she was saying in my head.

Poem 4

10/20/09
No Title
No Poet
http://kezze.dk/i-love-threadless/

Haikus are easy. But sometimes they don’t make sense. Refrigerator.

This is by far the funniest Haiku I have ever read. The first time it was told to me, I burst out laughing. I think that using humor in poetry is a good idea, especially in times like this. Sometimes Haikus can be dull, but this one is very funny.

Poem 3

10/20/09
The Road Not Taken
Frost
Bartleby.com: http://www.bartleby.com/119/1.html

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."
This is my favorite part of the poem. I guess I like parts of poems that are profound and mean a lot. This line says so much about life and it does mean a lot. He says that because he didn't follow a trend and made his own decision, he is better for it, and I agree with that completely.

Poem 2

10/20/09
We real cool
Brooks
Poets.org: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15433

I like this poem because the author says so much in so few words. She sends a
positive message through her poetry and I think it is very clever. She sends a
message to kids in her poem and makes it so the message is hidden, but still somehow
blatantly obvious.

Poem 1

10/20/09
Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)
Horace
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpe_diem

I had always heard the phrase Carpe Diem, or seize the day in English, but I never knew that it came from a poem. Then I read this poem and thought that it was the perfect compliment to the phrase. "While we speak, envious time will have already fled, SEIZE THE DAY and place no trust into tomorrow." It makes me feel that I should seize everyday like the poem says.
